Resolution Recognizing Pennsylvania’s Community Colleges Advances, Says Watro

March 19, 2025

HARRISBURG – A resolution designating April 2025 as “Community College Month” in Pennsylvania was unanimously approved by the House Education Committee this week, according to Rep. Dane Watro (R-Luzerne), who serves on the committee. House Resolution 64 will next be considered by the full House of Representatives.

Watro sponsored an amendment that updated the statistics in the resolution regarding community college enrollment and economic impact.

“Community colleges are vital to Pennsylvania’s growth, offering students access to affordable higher education and enhanced economic opportunities,” said Watro. “By providing classes that teach essential skills and workforce training, they play a key role in building a brighter future for us all.”

The Commonwealth’s 15 community colleges, including Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke, currently serve nearly 240,000 students. Community colleges partner with more than 2,000 employers statewide to provide more than $14 million in contracted workforce training. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, 75% of community college programs are aligned with high-priority occupations, including nursing, computer technicians and early childhood workers.
